Do you know why Occupational Health and Safety in the work environment is so important?
The OHS Act safeguards the welfare of those in employment. This legislation was established to protect BOTH employees and employers. The Occupational Health and Safety Assessments are enforced to identify and eliminate workplace hazards. This includes chemical and ergonomically risks as well as physical and psycho-social risks.
Taken into consideration on every assessment, is the working environment. A construction worker working at heights is more at risk to fall than a person sitting behind a desk. Law enforcement and healthcare workers are more at risk on a psycho-social level as they see more violent situations and experience trauma on a daily basis.
Being a SHE Rep is a big responsibility. You need to enforce the safety laws set out in the OHS Act and complete regular Occupational Health and Safety Assessments. Your responsibilities are:
• To identify hazardous conditions and inform all employees thereof
• Provide the necessary training so that employees can perform their duties safely
• Provide all PPE and ensure that employees uses it
• Prevent employees to act or work unsafely
• Prevent employees to use equipment if they did not receive the proper training
• Checking the functionality of equipment and make sure it is maintained correctly
• Provide clear visible warning signs for all hazardous equipment and machinery
• Ensure that all operators are in control of their machinery and have the proper training
• Enforcing the same safety rules on all employees
• Providing and clearly visible mark escape routes
• Train the workers on emergency procedures
• Preserving evidence at a scene of an injury to prevent disturbance or removal thereof
What does this all mean?
In short: You, as a SHE Rep, must assess all hazardous material, equipment and machinery so that those working with them are protected. It is your responsibility to make sure all employees have the correct PPE to work safely. It is your responsibility to make sure that all employees know what to do in the event of an emergency situation.
